the longest running drama series
Tanglin is a daily drama that centres on the lives of multiracial and multi-generational families – mainly the Tongs, Bhaskars, Rahmans and Lims - residents of a middle-income neighbourhood, in Holland Village. Their lives reflect the joys, trials and tribulations of everyday Singaporeans.
The long-form drama debuted on Channel 5 on 30 June 2015. After more than 3 years, the show is going to air its final episode on 28 September 2018. This brings the total number episodes to 825, a new record of the longest drama series in Singapore.
the double-storey set
The main set of Tanglin was the first-ever double storey set for Channel 5. It was designed by our Art Director, Wong Lab Seng. In designing the set, he had to find ways to fit 4 different living quarters, a clinic and a cafe in a 1000 sqm sound stage at Infinite Studio.
In December 2014, Mediacorp started constructing the set from ground up with steel structures. The set comes with many windows, and also had 6 bathrooms fitted with sinks, tubs, showers and toilets. Placing the furniture and fixtures was not an easy feat as Lab Seng had to consider how the lighting and camera angles would pan out in his design.
everything must go
Finally after 3 years, the production of Tanglin had come to an end. The final shooting ended on 2 June and the setting team promptly began striking off the set. Every single thing in the set had to be cleared from the sound stage, from the large wall structures to the small table props. Most of the props, furniture and fittings were kept and stored away neatly to be re-used in future productions.
The striking of the set was a very emotional process for many of us here at Mediacorp. The past few years of filming has inevitably resulted in strong attachments to the set and it has grown to take a special place in our hearts. As for now, we can only look forward to bigger and more exciting projects!
